What 3D modeling software can I use for 3D printing?

An overview of software options for additive manufacturing design.

There’s no shortage of options when it comes to 3D modeling software for 3D printing applications. Every major player in the computer aided design (CAD) space has at least one viable offering and, depending on your application, sometimes more than one.

To help you navigate through all the myriad options available, we’ve distilled them down into a few essential highlights you can use to find the right fit.

Autodesk AutoCAD

In addition, there are many AutoCAD plugins available on the Autodesk Exchange Apps store.

CATIA

FreeCAD

OpenSCAD

TinkerCAD is a free online 3D modeling program which runs in a web browser. It uses a simplified constructive solid geometry method for constructing models, with designs consisting of primitive shapes that are classified as either solids or holes. Combining solids and holes yields new shapes, which can in turn be designated as solids or holes.

ZBrush

Maxon ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool that uses a proprietary “pixol” technology for storing lighting, color, material, orientation and depth information for objects. It’s used to create high-resolution models exceeding 40 million polygons for use in movies, video games or for 3D printing. It’s particularly useful when working with high-resolution 3D scans of physical objects.
