Today on Tech Check, the easiest way to triple your screen count, the latest graphics cards from AMD, and a desktop that’s out of this world.
Laptop users who like plenty of screen space have plenty of options for portable displays, but none quite like Xebec’s new Snap monitor. With the help of a tensioning bracket that mounts to the back of their laptop, users can magnetically snap up to two extra screens onto their computer.
The 13.3-inch Snap screens have a 1920×1080 resolution, a 60 Hz refresh rate and up to 400 nits of brightness. Users can snap the screens into portrait, landscape or presentation mode, and each screen connects to the laptop with a single USB-C cable.
The Xebec Snap is a flashy and flexible option for hybrid workers, but it comes at a steep price. The Snap is currently on Kickstarter and backers can snap up the tri-screen version for $629. Starting in September it will retail for $999 and the dual-screen version will be $549. The first units are expected to ship this November.
AMD has put forth two new workstation graphics cards, the Radeon PRO W7500 and W7600. The two new mid-range cards are geared for pro workflows in CAD, CAM, BIM and beyond.
The new Radeon cards are built on AMD’s latest RDNA 3 architecture, which includes dedicated AI acceleration that AMD says delivers over twice the performance of the previous generation. Each of the new graphics cards packs 8GB of GDDR6 memory, a 128-bit memory interface and four DisplayPort outputs.
Both new cards are currently available from retailers, with OEM workstation support planned for later this year. The Radeon PRO W7500 is a 70W card and costs $429 and the W7600 is a 130W card and costs $599.
Dell-owned Alienware has launched a new high-performance desktop, the Aurora R16. With its minimal and ethereal aesthetic, the Aurora fits right in with a gaming setup—but its powerful specs make it a viable option for work as well.
The new computer offers both 12th and 13th-gen Intel Core processors with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards. The Aurora can be configured with up to 64 GB of DDR5 memory and 8 TB of SSD storage. Its prominently lit oval loop surrounds a large vent for efficient airflow that Alienware says makes for a quieter and cooler system than the previous R15.
The Aurora R16 is now available from Dell.com with a starting price of $1,750. That’ll get you a 13th-Gen Intel Core i7 and a GeForce RTX 4070. Alienware says that additional, flagship processor options will be available by the end of the year.
